How Natural Are Ant
Farms?
This depends very much on the species. In the wild, some South
American species may only have a few dozen workers in the nest whereas the red
harvester and the Florida harvester may have upto twelve thousand individuals.
Obviously if you transfer a few individuals from a much larger community into
your ant farm then their opportunities for interaction are going to be greatly
reduced and behavior will change accordingly. However, some ant behaviors are
hard-wired and will be displayed irrespective of the environment they find
themselves in. These include tunnelling and foraging and you should be able to
observe these quite easily, especially in the new gel-type ant farms. Find out
